With thousands of members reporting litterers all over the country, what are the trends with regard to the item littered? Who litters more, men or women? Do drivers or passengers litter more?

Keep in mind that these reports are generated every six hours and may not represent last-minute reports.

Litter By Type

Great report which shows the types of litter reported through this website. The data speaks for itself, showing that the most littered item is cigarette litter which backs up the fact that it is the single-most item cleaned up from highways.

Litter By Driver Sex

This report shows the sex of the driver when an item was littered from the same car, it does not show the sex of the offender if the offender is the passenger. Ultimately the driver of the car is responsible for the passengers in the car and asking for the sex of the offender might be a bit too much. This report depicts the sex of the driver where an item was discarded from their car.

Litter By Driver Age

This report depicts the age of the driver of the car when an item was discarded from the car - it does not depict the age of the offender. Although the passenger may have littered, the driver is responsible for the passengers in the car. This report depicts the age ranges of drivers where an item was discarded from their car.

Litter By Plate State

This report depicts the top 5 States where the car is registered rather than the state where the littering occurred. Keep in mind that this report is skewed based upon knowledge of this website with Pennsylvania being popular due to the press LitterButt has received locally. As States join you will notice these statistics increase for those States accordingly.

Litter By Litterer (Driver/Passenger/Unknown)

This report depicts who discarded the item from the car, usually the driver but not always the case. These results are much skewed as the old system did not capture this information but was left up to the reporter to indicate in the Notes field. Data conversion has attempted to extract this information from the Notes field however that task was difficult due to the free-form nature of this field - people indicated the passenger in many different ways.
