Every day we see articles about littering in the news, most notably cigarette litter because it causes fires. Each day I receive a list of articles regarding these incidents and will be posting them to make the point that discarded cigarette butts pose more of a threat than just their unsightliness.

Firefighters extinguished a small fire on Albany Hill on Friday afternoon without too much trouble, authorities said. The fire started shortly before 3 p.m. in the grass along a dirt access road on the north side of the hill, said Lt. Jeff Keary of the Albany Fire Department.

Firefighters evacuated Steve and Dave's bar in Old Town Friday afternoon after a smoldering cigarette interrupted happy hour. Around 5:15 p.m. Friday, the Eureka Fire Department dispatched several engines to the bar, after patrons reported smelling smoke while inside.

Cigarette butt 'believed' to have started Auger Falls Fire

Smouldering butt ignites blaze

A smouldering cigarette butt left unattended is the suspected cause of a house fire in south Nanaimo Friday afternoon. The fire badly damaged the deck of a two-storey house in the 600 block of Kennedy Street before moving into the attic of the house and causing extensive damage.
