Litter News

Every day we see articles about littering in the news, most notably cigarette litter because it causes fires. Each day I receive a list of articles regarding these incidents and will be posting them to make the point that discarded cigarette butts pose more of a threat than just their unsightliness.

LitterButt has also received it's fair share of press including articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and even mention on Good Morning America. These items will also be posted.

Texans have their pick of state’s litter

Take me to your litter. In Texas, that will be mostly cigarette butts. We - well, you, not me - pitched out almost 400 million cigarette butts in 2009, which made up 43 percent of Texas highway litter last year. Smokers who litter don't think cigarette butts are a big problem, and they are more likely to toss other items. Let's inhale: 18 percent of Texans smoke, and six out of 10 Texas smokers admit they litter. That means 11 percent of Texans are to blame for almost half of all our litter. Discarded butts now have taken over first place in roadside trash, replacing food-related items such as non-alcoholic drink cups and lunch cartons. Meantime, food trash actually has decreased.
